IWPS Numero Tres [11 Dec 2008|09:28pm]
I took 3rd in the one minute round and tied for first with a 30.0 in the four minute round.

They'll have the overall rankings tonight and I'm optimistic, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm a little confused as to how they're determining the rankings, I've heard conflicting theories from different poets. But whatever, I'm still stoked that I got my first perfect score in a national competition! (Thanks to Krystal's coaching and calming me down).

College Nationals Ahoy [31 Mar 2007|07:06pm]
So Shihan is hosting our bout at College Nationals next week.

3 of my teammates were part of the whole 2005 debacle.

Not sure if that's a violation of his suspension since CUPSI is sponsored by PSI but whatever.

It should be interesting regardless.

Study at University of California at Santa Cruz Discovers: New Mexicans Overreact Like Tons of Culos [07 Mar 2007|11:04am]
So it ends up that the citizenship clarification was because I didn't file a form correctly for payment and tax purposes which needs to specify citizenship and residency.

So basically we didn't receive payment cause of missing info that was my fault. D'oh!

Dude, (Who ended up with a Spanish surname) emailed me back with more info on the mishap.

I apologized.

I will continue to acknowledge the state of California for its prestine Universities.

I will learn to shut my fucking mouth until I know all sides of the matter.

Study at University of California at Santa Cruz Discovers: New Mexicans Aren't Americans [07 Mar 2007|01:22am]
So, the University of New Mexico Slam Team did a feature at UCSC last month for their kinetics poetry project festival. We have not received payment for the gig.

Because the financial officer at UCSC did not believe I was an American. Not sure if he assumed because we have the word "Mexico" in our state name or what. Or if the confusion was only regarding me or the whole team.

I was instructed to e-mail the man and confirm my citizenship which I viewed as an opportunity to drop a little history of El Norte.

####### has requested that I clarify my citizenship.

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1986. New Mexico, which became a state in 1912 located south of Colorado and between Texas and Arizona, which became a territory of the United States in 1848 under the condition of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which in turn annexed Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and California into the union as well.

I have lived here all my life. I've voted in the past two elections in the State of New Mexico, I'm a student at the University of New Mexico, my driver's license number is NM####### and I've attached a copy of passport to verify my citizenship.

And I find it personally and cluturally insulting that I even need to address this issue.

But i assure you that all the other members of the University of New Mexico Poetry Slam Team are American Citizens as well.

If you have any other questions regarding I or my teammates citizenship, i can be reached at ######@yahoo.com or at 505.###.#### and don't worry, it's not an international call.

Saludos,

Damien Flores

Hope the dude has a sense of humor regarding his own ignorance.

Wow, and I thought I wasn't that bad. [19 Feb 2007|11:34pm]
[ mood | What a day ]

Watch my poetry get reamed here.

Even Jay Bradley hates my shit.

Damn, glad I've got a verbally abusive family otherwise some of this stuff might actually hurt.

I like the inherint touch of almost racism. Probably shouldn't have submitted with Chicano poetry-esque with the epicness of Corky Gonzales.

C'mon folks, just say it.

"SPICS CAN'T WRITE POETRY LIKE A GABACHO CAN!" - Flaco Mondragon

Oh, people who take themselves so seriously. They give me such inspiration.

Academic Reading Jerk-Off-O-Rama [17 Feb 2007|01:14am]
Poesia es masputo, as Flaco Mondragon would say.

For those people who bitch about bad poetry slams, you can eat a shit cause a bad academia reading is even worse.

I was all stoked since I was asked to read with Jimmy Santiago Baca and Rudolfo Anaya, two of my literary heroes. I seriously would never have picked up a pen had I not read their work.

This reading was a benefit for Paula Gunn Allen, an excellent Native American writer so I hear, and who just so happens to be Lee Francis IV's (Team ABQ 06) auntie.

Bottom line:

Anaya didn't show.

Baca read two poems from my favorite book, was on stage for five minutes, tops, then in typcal JSB fashion, splits right after he's done and doesn't bother to listen to anyone else.

Gobs of boring, mastabutory writing ensues. Bad mic technique, horrible reading voices.

Only two good authors were Tony Mares and Levi Romero.

The rest made me want to start booing and hissing, especially the "blah" writer's scholarship winner, Forgot-Her-Name Ortiz, went on for what seemed like hours. I was enraged that this young woman is getting a $20,000 scholarship to produce bullshit like that. And I know, since she's the same age as me and is in the academia loop, she'll be published and famous in no time. I heard someone call Ortiz "The Female Sherman Alexie." And after hearing that, I sure wish that Sherman would fly to ABQ, walk up and totally punch that bitch in the face, Indian Style. Oh and it didn't help that she also has too much ego.

If you complain about undeserving poets winning slams, fuck yourself as well. Try undeserving poets getting big money from the government for lines like "my vagina is a flower" or my personal favorite, "smells like piss and lizard." Fuck you.

The UNM Slam Team read last, thanks to Levi Romero who gave us his spot in the reading after just one poem. Cuffee did "Pink and Brown" and it was very fitting and I did not mind hearing that poem for the millionth time because in all honesty, it was refreshing and better than most works read tonight. I performed "Storyteller," as it is titled but has been changed by everyone I fucking know calling it "Grandpa Poem." Carlos Contreras read a new poem about his dad, which is one of the best he's written in a while.

And guess what?

The academic audience loved it.

ABQ Slam has infiltrated the upper circle of New Mexico literature.

And you know you're staying brown when you're a Mexican sophomore and a published Ph.D. Gringa author tells you, "The future of poetry is safe in your hands."

Hay, que bullshit!

Watch out for James Altamirano, ABQ. He was a time penalty away from the final round.

Let's go to Michigan.

Anyone know Steve Marsh's number? I'm thinking we'll pay a visit to his couch.

People in New York, Ask Around [19 Dec 2006|08:24pm]
So I got an e-mail from a friend in New York that my poem, "Love is Like Donkey Kong," was performed by a skinny guy named "Matt" who was bearded and wearing a black beret. This happened at a readng in or near Greenwich. I'm not sure the details, chances are someone read my poem and didn't give credit in an open mic, but of all the people to plagarize, I find myself to be a hilarious choice. It's probably nothing, but ironic and funny none the less.
New Yorkers, if you have any information leading in the junk kicking of this Matt, you will be rewarded with some green chile.

I'm having middle school flashbacks.

I just found my copy of No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom.

Damn Gwen used to rock. Used to go on benders with the dudes from Sublime.
Her brother even writes for The Simpsons!

But she started dating some pussy boy Brit and his suckiness got passed on like some pop music STD.

Here's to all the fallen idols of 1996-99.

May your fame be solidified in some glorious manner of death only a rock star can achieve.
